The mother of Prabash Mondal, the prime accused in the Baruipur rape and murder case, on Wednesday said she would not accept her son's body, stating that he had received the punishment for his alleged actions.
Speaking to reporters, Mondal's mother said police officials had arrived at her home to inform her about his death and ask whether she wanted to visit the hospital.
"Two Policemen had come to my house. I had woken up just then. They told me that my son is dead, so would I like to go to the hospital. I told them that I cannot go as my husband is ailing."
She said she had no objection to whatever action was taken and refused to bring his body home.
"I told them to go ahead and do whatever they want as I have no objections. My son has been punished for what he did. I won't accept his body. I won't bring back his body to our house. He has not done anything good. He did wrong and he has been punished for it," she added.
"Kill him or do whatever you want. I have no objections. I won't accept his body," the accused mother further added.
Earlier on Wednesday, Prabash Mondal was killed in a police encounter while authorities were carrying out a reconstruction of the crime scene linked to the Baruipur rape and murder case.
According to police, Mondal allegedly tried to snatch a firearm from a police officer and fired at the team during the exercise.
"While the crime scene was being reconstructed, he attempted to snatch a weapon from the police and open fire at them. In retaliation, the police fired back, striking Prabhas; he was declared dead at the hospital," the Baruipur SP said.
Police officials also claimed that Mondal had been providing misleading information during interrogation and was not cooperating with investigators.
The case began after a 12-year-old girl went missing on July 4. Her body was found the following day in a pond near the Surjyapur Haat area. Police have alleged that the girl was raped and murdered before her body was placed inside a sack and dumped in the water.
The incident led to widespread protests, with angry residents blocking the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, setting tyres on fire and vandalising police vehicles while demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment for those responsible.
A few hours after the girl's body was recovered on Sunday, a man was lynched by a mob after locals suspected him of being involved in the crime.
